Wildlife Sculpture of JL Cook
The Artist’s Approach
A blend of scientific accuracy and artistic expression, every sculpture is a result of careful observation and countless hours of work. Each creature is tirelessly studied using both photographic reference and live animals to capture its essence in posture, motion, and gesture.
The Artist’s Style
Fluid forms and intricate details are combined to highlight the incredible beauty of often misunderstood creatures. Reptiles, frequently snakes, are JL Cook’s inspiration because of their dynamic curves and design potential, as well as the often visceral response that snakes cause. Functional artworks, particularly door handles and hardware, are of specific interest because of the engagement created between the viewer and the artwork. The ability and expectation of touching the sculpture and changing the context of how the animal is seen generates a pause and hopefully a greater appreciation for the beauty of creatures themselves.
