No. I work from observing live animals or photographic references. Every part of every sculpture, every scale, wrinkle, and rock, is sculpted by me.
Not really. I use a variety of clay and wax sculpting tools. Many of the tools I use to create the fine details are jewelry wax tools.
Foundry cast bronze is an almost timeless investment in art, skill, and craftsmanship. The Bronze Age began in 3300 BCE, and there are still beautiful works of art that have lasted until now, 5,000 years later. Bronze has the strength to be used for hundreds of years and withstand some of the harshest of exposures, including volcano blasts and shipwrecks. The lost-wax foundry process is complex and time-consuming and requires the skills and expertise of many artisans to produce a finished bronze sculpture from the original clay.
Lost-wax bronze is a foundry process that involves burning out a wax model and pouring molten metal into the shell of a ceramic mold. It begins with the same sculpture and rubber mold. Still, many steps must be done precisely to produce a finished bronze sculpture: mold-making, wax casting, wax-chasing, spruing, ceramic shell, burnout, bronze pouring, cleaning, metal chasing, and patination. The care and excellence of each artisan are crucial for every step to create a fine art quality bronze sculpture.
“Cold-cast” metal is a plastic, urethane resin mixed with metal powder. Sometimes stone powders (bonded-stone) can be used to mimic the look of marble or granite. It is cast from a rubber mold of the sculpture, and powdered metals, paints, and polishes are used to achieve the appearance of metal and other materials. Casting in resin is faster and more affordable than the lost-wax process or stone carving and can reproduce incredible detail. Though it may look like metal or stone and is quite durable, resin castings are breakable and do not have the strength to withstand heavy use or harsh exterior exposure.
